Prudhoe LRC

Prudhoe Learning Resource Centre (LRC), near Newcastle, is a replacement school library, which has been brought into being under the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme.

The Learning Resource Centre aims to play a central part in the life of the school and provides resources and services to support teaching and learning and encourage reading for pleasure. It aims to help students become keen, lifelong readers, to achieve their full potential and encourage enquiry and creativity.

Among the LRC’s resources are textbooks, general non-fiction and fiction, newspapers and magazines, journals, electronic resources and DVDs. There are 20 networked computers, which are used for class teaching and independent research. The study area has seating for 38 and is used for independent study and private reading.

British Thornton was asked to provide a complete loose and fixed furniture installation as a result of its successful partnership with Sir Robert McAlpine on the refurbishment of the main Prudhoe Community High School School - one of a number of improvement or replacement projects in the area.

The £12,500 contract saw the company sourcing and installing tables, chairs, bookshelves, soft seating and the library reception. The 13 different types of furniture add up to 81 separate items in total.

The unique, colourful mix of white, lime and ferreira oak-coloured fixtures creates a calming, inviting environment for students and staff, while an important requirement was building flexibility into the installations. The centre shelving units have hidden castors, allowing them to be readily moved to create enough room to convert the area into a temporary classroom or presentation area.

Quote from the LRC

"The LRC has become a real focal point within the new building and is the only area with a splash of colour; something the students definitely appreciate. Now it is a purposeful and inviting environment for students and the new setting has been a hit with both staff and students. Cara Boyd LRC Manager

"The LRC is bright, fresh, welcoming and comfortable; as a result more students are using the LRC" LRC Student
