British Thornton Laboratory Furniture Features on Television!

British Thornton's newly installed laboratory furniture features on the BBC series, James May's Toy Stories.

The TV series follows James May making life-size constructions with some of Britain's best-loved toys. During this episode, James May and student engineers at the University of Liverpool build a Meccano bridge to span part of the Leeds-Liverpool canal in Merseyside. The construction of the bridge was undertaken in the newly built and refurbished mechanical engineering department at Liverpool University.

Prior to the show, Liverpool University invested £32M in a major rebuild and refurbishment of their research laboratories. The new buildings includes refurbished laboratories and innovative Active Learning Labs in which 250 students at a time can engage in team and project work.

British Thornton was commissioned to design, manufacture and install the furniture for this new build project. The project involved designing a series of bespoke benches with removable underbench pods for the active learning labs. The strength of an underbench pod was put to the test when James May climbed on top of it. Of course, the unit proved totally resistant to his abuse!
